Increasing understanding that the use of data could threaten democracy as companies become more important than Governments. Beginning with Google in 2001 data and its use to predict and mould human behavior with regard to consumer spending in particular but also voting has been the business of the past 2 decades. It is difficult to predict in which direction things will go – further commoditisation or a public and/or governmental backlash, in any of the potential future trajectories legitimate, compliant, well safeguarded use of data is a critical building block for all investment firms.
